Yes, it is a tourist town that only flourishes during the cruise ship season, but it still has a historical small town flavor.
The small scale makes it an easy walk for almost anyone.
Most importantly, it is historically one of the major take-off points for White Pass and the Chilkoot Trail to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898.
The Skagway Historic District and White Pass is a National Historic Landmark District.
From here, you can tour up the Klondike Highway through White Pass to Canada's Yukon Territory and more historic gold fields.
